This executive report examines the costs and benefits of adhering to the Paris Agreement, a 2015 treaty which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius.
I outline barriers — monetary, psychological and ethical — which stand in the way of achieving these goals. I also examine exactly how much it would cost and how much the U.S. can save by implementing the recommendations detailed in the last section. Those recommendations include decreasing carbon pollution by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Reaching those goals will require immediate reduction in fossil fuel use; the deployment of low-emission energy sources such as wind and solar; switching to alternative energy carriers; and improvements overall in energy efficiency and conservation.
To create this report, I analyzed EPA, NRDC, IPCC and DOI findings, as well as multiple books, articles and papers. I created the design using Microsoft Office Suite.
